ABOUT US
The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) was established in 1978, and started participating in the Summer Olympic Games in 1980 (Moscow Russia). The BNOC is not only responsible for facilitating the participation of Team Botswana to the Olympic Games, but it is the body in charge of Commonwealth Games for Botswana. Thus, the BNOC is also Commonwealth Games Botswana. Team Botswana first participated at the Commonwealth Games in 1974.
Over the years, the quality of performance at the Olympic Games and at Commonwealth Games has improved exceptionally. In 2000, Glody Dube became the first Motswana to make it into the finals of any competition at the Olympic Games, followed by the 4x4 Relay Team making it into the finals in 2004. In 2008, Amantle Montsho also made it to the women’s 400m final. In 2012, Botswana won their first Olympic medal: A silver medal by Nijel Amos.
At the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games, Botswana has a total of eleven medals. From the first medal (bronze), won by Barb Anderson of Bowling in 1986, to the silver Olympic medal won by Nijel Amos, and a total of 5 Youth medals.
The BNOC strives to promote excellence in Elite Sport through simultaneous support of athletes, administrator’s coaches, and other sport support services. These programmes have been supported mainly through Olympic Solidarity funding.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The BNOC's role is to promote the development of elite sport, through the provision of administrative and technical support to the National Sport Associations.
This facilitates the emergence of high calibre sports persons who are able to successfully compete at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games and be good sports ambassadors for the country.
Sport is a powerful tool for unity, cultural exchange, national branding, health, and, most importantly for building relations. Through sport, youth develop integrity, honesty, self- confidence, mutual respect, friendship and tolerance, promoting the spirit of Olympism and the Commonwealth ideals.
As we move towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the BNOC is committed to support athletes to qualify and compete at these Games. This will be a significant year as BNOC will be celebrating 40years of competing at the Olympic Games, having made a maiden appearance at Moscow 1980 Games.
